Having annual eye exams performed is an important part of health care routines for people of all ages. Many patients, however, only see an eye doctor when they experience unexpected changes in vision or discomfort in the eye area — and this practice can increase the chances of the development of serious ocular problems. Early detection is essential when it comes to all aspects of health care, including eye health.

The following are just a few of the many reasons to schedule an eye appointment on an annual basis for each family member.

Eye Exams Can Uncover Other Serious Health Issues

Many people first learn they have conditions such as diabetes, elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and even certain forms of cancer as the result of a comprehensive eye exam. For instance, your eye doctor will perform a close examination of the blood vessels in your retina, which in turn provide a good indication of the condition of your blood vessels in other parts of the body and act as warning signs of the presence of systemic diseases.

Eye Exams Can Detect the Early Onset of Glaucoma

Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness, and unfortunately, obvious symptoms of this disease are usually difficult to discern early on. One of the most common reasons why those with glaucoma experience vision loss is because the condition wasn’t diagnosed and treated early on. Keep in mind that glaucoma is a progressive disease that becomes worse as time goes on.

Eye Exams Can Help Find Solutions for Digital Eyestrain

Almost everyone spends at least part of their day in front of a screen, and this time increases greatly among those who routinely use electronic devices fo work or school. Evidence suggests that using electronic devices on a regular basis can actually alter the basic functionality of the eyes, and your doctor may be able to prescribe special glasses if you’re suffering from digital eye strain.

What to Expect During a Routine Eye Exam

During your first visit to our office, we’ll perform a thorough medical and vision screening designed to help craft a customized care plan for your ocular needs. The doctor will then give you a visual acuity test determined to see how well your eyes focus on objects that are relatively far away. You’ll then be tested on your ability to focus clearly on objects that are close at hand. The next is a cover test, which is used to determine how well your eyes work in sync with one another. You’ll then be given screenings to determine any issues with color blindness and another one for depth perception that uses 3-D technology to discern your overall vision as it relates to your surrounding environment.

Based on the results of your initial screening, the eye doctor will then administer a glaucoma test as well as testing designed to determine if macular degeneration, cataracts, or other conditions exist. Although most people think of eye problems as something that primarily affects older adults, children and young adults can nonetheless benefit from regular eye exams as well, especially since using screens on a constant basis is basically mandatory these days for students.
